For years, iPhone apps have been designed as solid layers placed on top of the screen. Navigation bars, menus, cards and buttons separated the application from everything behind it. The wallpaper remained mostly decorative, while the interface covered almost the entire display. In iOS 27, those boundaries begin to disappear. Controls feel lighter, panels become translucent, navigation elements appear to float and the content is allowed to breathe through the interface.
The first time you see it, the new design can feel almost too transparent. After a few days, however, it starts to make more sense. The screen feels less crowded, the interface stops competing with the content and the iPhone begins to look like one connected surface rather than a collection of separate windows.

While testing iOS 27, I started wondering what would happen if the applications we use every day fully adopted Apple’s new visual language. I was not interested in changing only their icons. I wanted to imagine the entire experience: profile pages, navigation bars, search fields, buttons, settings screens and content cards rebuilt around transparency.
That question became the starting point for this concept series. I began with Instagram, because it is an application most people recognize immediately. The challenge was to keep everything familiar while making the interface feel as though it had been designed specifically for iOS 27. The profile structure, story circles, post grid and navigation still had to look like Instagram, but the surrounding interface needed to become lighter and more connected to the background.
Once the first design was finished, it became difficult to stop. I moved on to TikTok, YouTube, Pinterest, X, Facebook, Threads, Google Maps, the App Store, Settings and other apps. Some adapted to the glass style almost immediately. Others needed much more work because transparency can easily become distracting when an application already contains a lot of color, text or movement.
Adding a blur effect is easy. Creating a transparent interface that remains comfortable to use is not. Every layer must preserve enough contrast to stay readable. Every control must remain visible without becoming too heavy. The background should be present, but it should never compete with the content. When those elements are balanced correctly, the interface feels modern and almost effortless. When they are not, the result looks like someone simply reduced the opacity and hoped for the best.
The concepts below show how thirteen familiar applications could look if their interfaces were redesigned around the new iOS 27 glass direction. These are not leaks, official screenshots or confirmed updates from the developers. They are my own visual experiments based on the design language I am seeing throughout the new operating system.
I deliberately kept the layouts recognizable. Instagram still looks like Instagram. YouTube still feels like YouTube. Google Maps remains a navigation app rather than becoming an abstract design exercise. The difference is in the material surrounding the content: translucent navigation, floating controls, softer cards, more visible backgrounds and a clearer sense of depth.
This is not simply what transparent app icons could look like. It is a glimpse at how the applications themselves might change if developers fully embraced Apple’s new design direction.
One of the most interesting things I discovered while creating these concepts is that transparency does not improve every application in the same way. Social apps such as Instagram, Threads and Facebook already rely heavily on profile images, photography and user-generated content. A softer interface allows that content to become more prominent, while navigation controls quietly move into the background.
Video apps create a different challenge. YouTube and TikTok need controls that remain visible over constantly changing content. A translucent button may look beautiful over a dark video and almost disappear over a bright one. That means the glass material cannot be completely passive. It needs blur, contrast, adaptive shading and carefully controlled highlights to remain readable in every situation.
Google Maps may be one of the most natural applications for this design direction. Maps already contain many visual layers, and solid interface panels often cover part of the route or location you are trying to see. Transparent controls can preserve more of the map while keeping directions, search and navigation available. When it works properly, the interface feels less like something placed over the map and more like part of the map itself.
Settings is interesting for the opposite reason. It contains very little photography or colorful media, but its long lists and repeated controls benefit from clearer separation and softer depth. A glass redesign can make the app feel more modern without changing the way it works. In fact, some of the most successful redesigns are the ones where the user immediately notices that the interface feels better but cannot point to one dramatic change.
The new direction also raises an important question: how much transparency is too much? An interface can look impressive in a screenshot and still become tiring after several hours of daily use. If every surface reflects the wallpaper, every button floats and every section uses blur, the visual effect may quickly become more important than the information itself.
Apple usually understands this balance better than most companies. The strongest parts of the iOS 27 design are not necessarily the most transparent ones. They are the places where transparency is used to explain hierarchy. A floating control should feel closer to the user than the content beneath it. A translucent navigation bar should remain present without creating a heavy wall across the screen. A panel should separate information while still allowing the surrounding environment to remain visible.
That is why I do not think the future of iPhone apps will be completely transparent. The better direction is selective transparency. Important content remains clear and stable, while navigation and secondary controls become lighter. The interface does not disappear; it simply stops demanding attention all the time.
The most successful glass interfaces make photos, video, maps and text more visible rather than less readable.
Transparency should explain which controls are closer, which content is active and where the user should look next.
Not every part of an app needs to be glass. Selective use often creates a cleaner and more practical result.
These images are concepts, but Apple’s influence on app design is difficult to ignore. When the company introduced the flat interface of iOS 7, third-party apps gradually changed with it. When Dark Mode arrived, developers redesigned entire interfaces so they would feel natural inside the system. Dynamic Island also encouraged applications to rethink live information and background activity.
If users respond positively to the iOS 27 glass direction, developers will probably begin experimenting with it as well. The change may not happen immediately, and every company will interpret the new style differently. Instagram will still need to look like Instagram, Google will continue using its own design language and TikTok will not suddenly become an Apple app. But the materials, spacing, transitions and navigation patterns may slowly move in the same direction.
That could eventually make the iPhone feel more consistent. Today, moving from one application to another can feel like entering completely different visual worlds. A shared approach to depth, translucency and navigation could connect those experiences without removing the personality of each service.
There is also a risk that developers will copy only the most obvious part of the design. We will probably see many interfaces with excessive blur, transparent panels placed everywhere and glass buttons added simply because they look new. That happens with every visual trend. The real challenge is not copying Apple’s effect; it is understanding why Apple uses it.
I did not expect transparency to become one of the most interesting parts of iOS 27. Before installing the update, I was more curious about intelligence, performance and the new system features. Yet the visual direction is the change I notice every time I unlock the iPhone.
It does not make the device faster, and it does not solve every problem with the interface. In some places, I still think Apple needs to improve contrast and readability. Early beta software is also rarely the best time to judge a design that may continue changing before the final release.
But the direction feels important. Apple is no longer treating the screen as a flat collection of rectangles. The interface is beginning to behave more like a physical material, reacting to content, color, movement and depth. When it works, the iPhone feels more alive without becoming louder.
The concepts in this article are my attempt to imagine where that idea could go next. Some of these designs may never exist outside this gallery. Others may look surprisingly close to real app updates we see over the next year. Either way, I think the conversation around transparency has only started.
